The Great Invocation, expo in Garage Rotterdam

The Great Invocation refers to the mantra allegedly received by British writer Alice Bailey from a spirit guide in 1945, as the last battles of WWII ravaged Europe. Bailey described The Great Invocation as a synthesis of meditation, prayer, and affirmation, that would assist the world in times of unprecedented calamity, thus ‘saving humanity from self-destruction’.

While some of the artists participating in The Great Invocation explore totemism, others investigate arcane aspects of human consciousness via strategies such as automatism, sublimation, and séance. The artworks – or the processes involved in producing them – are conduits for intuitive powers latent in the mind; tools for accessing hidden, perhaps even divine, knowledge. The exhibition features several pieces of visionary art from the internationally acclaimed collection of De Stadshof Foundation: Madge Gill, Bertus Jonkers, Jan Kervezee and Marc Lamy.

Ultimately, this exhibition demonstrates that, while visual art may be inherently ‘of this world’, it can be a source of revelation and transcendence. In a society where scientific rationality and technological objectivity dominate, art remains uniquely capable of providing us with a means of satisfying spiritual hunger.

The great Invocation verwijst naar een mantra die Britse schrijfster Alice Bailey in 1945 van haar spirituele leider zou hebben ontvangen, toen de Tweede Wereldoorlog nog volop door Europa raasde. Bailey omschreef de Grote Aanroep als een combinatie van meditatie, gebed en affirmaties die de wereld konden helpen in tijden van ongeëvenaarde rampspoed, om zo ‘de mensheid tegen zelfvernietiging te beschermen’.

Terwijl sommige deelnemende kunstenaars zich verdiepen in totemisme, gaan andere op zoek naar aspecten van het menselijke bewustzijn door middel van automatisme, sublimering of séance. De kunstwerken – of het proces waarmee ze tot stand zijn gekomen – zijn uitingen van de intuïtieve krachten die in onze ziel sluimeren. Het kunnen middelen zijn om toegang te krijgen tot verborgen of zelfs goddelijke kennis. Deze tentoonstelling bevat een aantal visionaire kunstwerken uit de internationaal vermaarde kunstverzameling van Collectie De Stadshof: Madge Gill, Bertus Jonkers, Jan Kervezee en Marc Lamy.

The Great Invocation toont ons dat kunst, terwijl het een intrinsiek onderdeel is van deze wereld, ook een bron kan zijn van openbaring en bovenzintuiglijke ervaringen. In een wereld waarin technologie en rationaliteit de boventoon voeren, blijft kunst op een unieke manier in staat om onze spirituele honger te stillen.
