McQuirk has transformed the Catholic iconography (for example the cross) that oppressed him, into his own illuminated language of signs and totems. Priests, nuns, orphans are transmuted into children’s symbols: scarecrows, phantoms and dolls, set about with suns, rainbows, black night-skies.
