Willem van Genk, Microcollage, details
The central scene here depicts a parading group of people seen behind a red flag, walking past a sign showing the date 1 May ’73. They appear to be passing under a banner with the text Sowjet Union. At the top we read the second part of the title: the study trip of Beatrix and Claus to Russia… A.N.P. In the left-hand panel we see Van Genk in front of a TV screen, with a gun to his head. Across this image runs a banderol with the English title of the thesis by psychiatrist Plokker Shattered Image. In a small medallion we see a child, being subjected to a humiliating beating from his father. The right-hand panel depicts a DAF locomotive travelling past a basket overflowing with a globe, magazines and travel guidebooks: the gateway to Imagination Land.
