Heijmans, Roel

Roel Jean Marie Heijmans is a self-taught artist with a physical disability. Of his disability, he states: “I don’t let my physical disability keep me from painting, because painting gives me deep fulfillment.” About 25 years of age, Heijmans was introduced to the art of drawing by his brother-in-law, a professional artist. Years later, he has discovered that the best material for him to handle are oil pastels. Heijman’s subjects range from nature and religion to political subjects and pop stars. He describes the images in his art as “big and very colorful with black lines around them” and notes the important influence that Chagall has had on his artwork.
