Born in 1939 in northern Iran, as a teenager, Koochaki left his farming family and moved to Tehran. He began drawing when he was around 40 and, after retiring from his work as an automobile mechanic, focused full-time on his art.<\/p>\n<p>His mysterious\u00a0pencil-on-paper drawings of oddly shaped\u00a0half-human and half-animal creatures delighted audiences and attracted collectors in Europe and the United States. They constitute one of the most original bodies of work in\u00a0the\u00a0<em>art brut<\/em>\u00a0field today.
