Carlo Zinelli wordt tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog gemobiliseerd en raakt zwaar getraumatiseerd door de oorlog. In 1947 wordt hij in het psychiatrisch ziekenhuis van San Giacomo in de buurt van Verona opgenomen. Hij lijdt aan hallucinaties en achtervolgingswaan. In 1957 overtuigt de Schotse beeldhouwer Michael Noble professor Marini om een workshop te openen voor kunstenaars. Carlo is dan eenenveertig. Gedurende de volgende veertien jaar zal hij bijna drieduizend tekeningen maken, meestal gouaches.
